description of Teacher:
I am someone who realizes that learning occurs best when the subject matter has a purpose or can be fun for the student. I don't use a hammer when a wrench is needed: I don't keep harping on a particular math problem when the real problem is that the student hasn't learned the basics or that they don't see why the subject even matters. We can get by all that and move on toward understanding and mastering the subject matter.

Teacher's qualifications:
I have been teaching people to master subject matter (math and reading, especially) and good scholarship for years as a parent, a supervisor at work, and as a tutor at college. I have been tutoring high school students part-time since late last year and have been successful in bringing their grades up and in getting them interested in reading and studying again in the short time I have been working with them. Although I have no degree from a University in teaching, the "School of Hard Knocks" and "Sockitto U" have taught me that preparation and a sound understanding of the principles to be mastered get a student through every time if they have the desire to make it.

Teacher's preferred teaching style:
I like to start by solving problems and seeing where the student's strengths and difficulties lie. There is no judging, no "diagnostics" to rate the student: I just assess where the student is having an underlying problem (for example, they don't understand addition, subtraction, fractions), and try to work on that while we are working on the concept at hand. Going forward while filling in the gaps works really well for me.

long description:
Algebra is the first time we step out of traditional mathematics that we learned in the lower grades. It's fun but it can be really scary and frustrating, too. Algebra is just a way of setting up and solving problems where one or two parts of the problem are not yet known.
