description of :
I earned an MS degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida in 2004 as an non-traditional student who began my quest for higher ed at the age of 40 in 1995, I honorably retired from the Florida Highway Patrol with the rank of Lieutenant after serving nearly 27 years as a state trooper. My experience and extensive law enforcement training are extremely valuable. I remained as a Reserve Trooper with FHP until I completed 30 years of service. I currently teach online and in the traditional classroom at the state university. My wife holds a Doctorate of Education and has assisted me in learning the proper methodology of instructional development and delivery. I have developed several criminal justice courses for online universities and for traditional colleges as well. I interact well with students and faculty alike, and my evaluations reflect that I remain a valued instructor at these institutions. Being healthy and retired at the age of 54 makes my teaching just that much more rewarding to me. I am indeed paying it forward.

Teaching philosophy:

I believe that higher education empowers a person to become more productive as a citizen, a better employee, and sets the stage for one to become more politically active in the quest for social justice and criminal justice reform. Being a non-traditional college student myself, I understand the challenges that a student faces while striving to earn their college degree. I understand the concepts and practices of andragogy which is imperative when teaching both traditional and non-traditional students at the college level. I adhere to student-centered teaching practices and believe that both the instructor and student share responsibilities in their learning process. I believe that tolerating substandard student efforts in order to achieve higher student retention rates is contrary to incontrovertible academic values. I place a strong emphasis on academic excellence, scholarly research techniques, efficient time management and effective written communication skills. I nurture students to learn time management skills, practice sound study habits and to take advantage of the many academic resources available to guide students towards success. It is my belief that these practices insure that the students receive an education which is practical, useful, and effective and guarantees the value of their college degree while defending the integrity of the learning institution.
Not only do I stress course-related
interaction, especially in the online learning environment...I enjoy it!
