long description:
The US incarcerates more of its citizens than any other
country in the world. Why? What are the economics of
prisons and justice? Who are the criminals? What are the
crimes? What are the myths and realities surrounding the
business of crime and justice? What is the relationship
between cime and the current violent culture of punishment
and vengeance growing inside the jails and prisons
throughout the US? What is the relationship between the
booming prison industry and our society as a whole? With
ourselves? This course examines the complex, intertwined
dynamics of economics, politics, culture and resistance
struggles through the use of critical readings, lectures and
discussions.

Teacher's qualifications:
University courses taught include:
The Culture and Economics of US Prisons

International Economics
Introductory Macroeconomics
Intermediate Macroeconomics
Introductory Microeconomics
Marxian Economic Theory
Statistics
Political Economy
I have been awarded the Certificate of Appreciation for Excellence in Teaching three times, and was recently nominated for the University of Massachusetts Distinguished Teaching Award.
's preferred teaching style:
I believe in active learning. I think that it is in the exchange of ideas where real learning takes place. I think that one of the critical ingredients in a successful teaching experience is the student's desire to learn. I'm amazed continually be how much a person can learn if they have the desire.
