The reader and the text: a complex relationship

tutoring & advice

 with Kenneth Curmi

short description:
A short course on the role of the reader analyzing the process which goes on between the sender and receiver and the text as intermediary.

long description:
Firstly, we shall analyse what goes on in a process of communication, and briefly outline the main schools of thought and litereary movements [formalism, structuralism, reader-response, etc].
The course shall then take on a more technical approach, defining the jargon and parts which make up a text.
In the third part, we shall tackle the relationship between author and reader, as well as author and text.
The role of the leader shall be tackled in the fourth part, followed by an in-depth analysis of the interpretative process.

description of :
I am currently reading for an M.A. in European Studies at the University of Malta. I am in possession of a degree (B.A. Hons, second-upper) in Italian, and teach Italian at secondary-level. I am T.E.F.L. qualified, and have taught English to foreign students. I have also worked as a journalist, writing articles for the culture section of a web-portal (a yahoo search of my name will provide some).

Teacher's qualifications:
T.E.F.L.
B.A. (Hons.) Italian
M.A. European Studies (expected summer 2005)

Relevant Experience:
Teacher of English as a Foreign Language in summer 2004.
[Currently] Teacher of Italian at secondary level.
Culture Contributor up to 2005.

's preferred teaching style:
My preferred teaching style is definitelty dialogical. Offline assignments are sometimes important, but mostly it will be a reading exercise. I can never stress enough the importance of reading. A teacher can only point the way, it is through reading that one reaches the targeted destination.
