C++/Java Independent Study Program

tutoring & advice

 with Yoel Ben-Avraham

short description:
Software Developer with 18 Years Experience Available to Mentor Independent Learners in C/C++/Java or OOA&D

long description:
Over the past 18 years there have been two threads woven throughout my career: The first software development. Initially in C, afterwards C++ and always targeted for the MS-Windows environment. In the past decade I made the move to Java.

The second thread was training. Initially corporate training, afterward more academic frameworks, culumating in a five year period in which I focused day and night on the delivery of intensive occupational retaining courses for academics looking to IT for a better future.

Throughout my entire career my software development activities fed my training/educating making my lessons real, vivid and practical. My training activity influenced my software acrivities improving my ability to communicate with client, team members and later investors.

Currently semi-retired, I'm looking to establish the close mentoring bond I enjoyed in those intensive courses. Sharing with aspiring young software developers the knowledge and lessons I've learned over the past two decades.

description of :
Over 18 years experience as a corporate trainer. 10 years experience teaching in non-credit courses in academic environments. Interestingly enough I have almost 15 years experience exploiting connectivity as a tool for teaching programming!

Teacher's qualifications:
A complete detailed description of my professional experience, both software and training can be found at: http://ca.geocities.com/ybainc/

You can read feedback from several of my students and "employers" from various training frameworks.

's preferred teaching style:
The best way to sum up my "teaching style" is with three words:
- Socratic - I answer questions with questions. My questions lead the student to re-evaluate his question, his knowledge and hopefully find the answer themself.
Hands On - everything is translated into Skill Mastery Exercises which challenge the student to implement every concept and syntax feature they learn.
Available - Despite my socratic tendencies, I won't let a student's frustration level overwhelm them. I'm always there to answer questions, make suggestions and encourage them to take the next step.
