COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is a study of world civilization from its origins in the Near East to the age of explorations and reformation in 1650s. This survey is designed to offer students a general understanding of major events and concepts that have shaped cultures of the world. These developments are studied from both chronological and historiographical perspectives in this course. The course material emphasizes the social, religious, economic, and political diversity in different societies and peoples so that students can appreciate the complex nature of human progress. The critical examination of the primary and secondary sources will be done through lectures, discussions, and written assignments. More specifically, we will be investigating the processes of change in dynasties, geographic borders, gender roles, military technology, and socioeconomic patterns.
