Hello. I have been teaching for 11 years. My first two years of teaching were in the Adult Basic Education programs at two North Carolina community colleges. I taught basic math and Algebra 1. I then fell in love with teaching and continued my own education to receive a North Carolina certification to teach 6th to 9th grade mathematics. I currently teach in Sampson County at a middle school, and I instruct 8th grade students in 8th grade math and Algebra 1. I am trained to teach Geometry and Algebra II also, and I might provide tutoring services for those subjects as well.
 
Teacher's qualifications:
August 2010 to present I am working with Sampson Middle School in Sampson County, North Carolina as an 8th grade math and Algebra 1 teacher. Prior to this school, I taught 8th grade math and Algebra at Brunswick County Alternative Learning Center's Transition Academy. I was there for two years from May 2008 to May 2010. Prior to teaching with the alternative school, I taught with Duplin County Schools from 2003 to 2007. From 2003 to 2006, I taught at James Kenan High School, helping 9th and 10th grade students master Algebra 1. I spent the last part of 2006 into the first part of 2007 with Kenansville Middle School as an 8th grade math and Algebra 1 instructor. From 2001-2005, I taught adults the basics of mathematics up to Algebra 1 at both Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville, NC and with James Sprunt Community College in Kenansville, NC. Both of these positions were part-time. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Business with a math minor, I have completed 37 of 43 credit hours toward my MBA with at least 18 of those hours in higher mathematics courses with no grade below a B. I am an NC certified 6-9th grade mathematics teacher at present, concentraing in adapting teaching to meet the learning style of the student, and I am pursuing National Board Certification in middle school mathematics.
 
's preferred teaching style:
My teaching style is simple and direct. I present the information to you with an introductory problem that I ask you how you would solve with no assistance. This gives me an idea of how much math knowledge you have and how much knowledge you need. We dialogue through the problem together, and I fill in the learning gaps for you by presenting the information you need to be successful with that problem. We then do some more guided practice together, I do a quick assessment of the information you have retained and re-teach if necessary, and then I give you independent practice problems to do on your own during the session, then we discuss them, or you do the independent practice prior to the next session, and we go over them then, moving on the next subject. I like to use technologoy to teach, including but not limited to the TI-84 graphing calculator, Microsoft Power Point, various mathematics websites, etceteras. I also try to guide you in hands-on activities to illustrate the concepts whenever that is feasible, which requires you and me to have webcams, but you don't have to have a webcam to learn well with me.
