Tutoring in French for beginning students

tutoring & advice

 with Gary Krupa

short description:
Helping beginning students of French feel comfortable speaking and or writing the French language

long description:
Lessons will progress from basic vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation exercises, to reading comprehension, discussions and cultural insights.

I?d customize the course to what the student wants to learn.

I?d base many of my lessons on my student's area of interest. For example, if a student likes art, we'd talk about art. I'd give the student an assignment writing about their favorite artist. For another assignment, I'd ask the student to write a letter to someone in the foreign language.

Some lessons would be conducted using a standard textbook [see below] or workbook in the foreign language.

There'd be lessons in which I test the student on their use of expressions. In other lessons, I'd test the student on vocabulary or grammar usage.

Other lessons or activities, depending upon the student?s level of skill and comfort, include the following:
a)Translating a website or other printed material
b)The student would serve as a translator for a friend or family member. The student would speak in the language I'm teaching.
Friends and family members would speak in their native language.

Some assignments would consist of studying from the textbook French: A Self-Teaching Guide 2nd Edition. The Easy French Reader will be used as a supplement. Online teaching resources such as About.com: French Language will also provide material for assignments. Other assignments would make use of a foreign language website, still others may involve watching a film or TV show, or listening to a song, and answering questions in the foreign language.

description of :
I live in Rimrock, Arizona, near Sedona.

Three years of high school in Hicksville, New York USA.

Four years of college at Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York USA.

I'm a Certified Public Accountant. I'm married and my wife and I have two cats. I restarted the Sedona French Club in January 2010.

Teacher's qualifications:
Took five years of French in High School and College, including French Conversation.

Took one semester of Russian, and one year of Spanish in college.

Organized two French groups and improved my French speaking and writing by communicating with the native speakers who joined the groups.

I communicated with French-speaking clients by speaking with them and writing to them in French.

's preferred teaching style:
My teaching approach is to customize lessons and activities according to what the student needs in order to progress in the most effective and rapid manner.

However, the student must master the lesson material before proceeding to the next lesson.

I?d accomplish this by testing the student upon completion of the lesson, either by oral or written comprehension exercises, or by giving a quiz.

I?ll teach the student to communicate correctly in the foreign language, at a pace that's comfortable for the student. Such hands-on instruction will serve to immerse the student in the foreign language.

Having a conversation with the student in the foreign language they're learning is an important way of helping them progress. I'll also encourage students to write in the foreign language.

A variety of assignments and lessons will help the student become more interested in learning the language.

What sets my program apart is that I'm very patient when providing instruction, that I care about my students' progress, and that I communicate clearly and in a very interesting manner. I?m passionate about the languages I know and teaching others to speak and write well in those languages. I have a curiosity when it comes to learning about the French language. I encourage my students to have a similar curiosity. I encourage every student to communicate freely in the foreign language without being afraid to make mistakes. In that way, the student will gain confidence in speaking and writing the language.

I help my students to express themselves creatively in the foreign language I?m teaching them.
