An introduction to the way the body works (Human physiology)

This course will provide a brief overview of how the body is arranged into different levels of organisation, eg. cells and systems.It will be of interest to those who are simply curious as to how their own body functions in good health or those who may be interested to understand how it may be affected during disease
To illustrate this in more detail the student is invited to select two or more of the body sytems to look at in more detail.
The systems offered include

The Cardiovascular system- the heart, blood and blood vessels
The nervous system - brain, spinal cord
The respiratory system- lungs and airways
Skeleto-Muscular system- bones, joints and muscles
Immune system- antibodies, lymph glands

Other systems may be offered if requested.
The approach taken to the study of the body will be dependent on the students areas of interest eg the heart can be looked at in terms of sporting performance and exercise or in terms of effects of heart disease.

description of :
I am experienced enthusiastic lecturer in a college in the UK. The college deals with post 16 year olds. I have contributed to a range of courses including sport science, health and social care and Psychology programmes. My students report that they enjoy my interactive teaching style. My greatest satisfaction is to see students develop the skills needed to critically analyse subjects that are of interest to them.
Teacher's qualifications:
Masters degree in Applied Psychology (Drug Use and Addictions) from Liverpool John Moores University 1996.
BSc (hons) Physiology from Leeds University 1981
Post Graduate certificate in Education Huddersfield University 1982
Teaching experience - Employed as a full time lecturer in College of Further education.
Teaching experience:
Teaching applied Physiology units across a range of courses in Health and social care, Psychology, and Sport Science. To students of all ages and abilities.
Also delivered 5 week series of lectures to undergraduate Psychology studnets on "concepts of addiction"

I am a qualified football(soccer) coach and a member of the Football Association Coaches Association.

's preferred teaching style:
I use intereactive approaches involving question and answer sessions, use of case studies/examples follwoed by discussions and also traditional "chalk and talk" where appropriate.
Students are encouraged to improve their own learning skills and to form networks of support with each other to support and aid their learning.
